LINCOLN & YORK - FIELD TRIP TO ZAMBIA
Aug 2008
Lincoln & York co-founder and director Simon Herring made a field trip to Zambia in Summer 2008. Zambia is a relatively small producer of coffee but some of the finest examples of African Arabicas come from here.
Here is one of the major farmers, Munali, which is at the cutting edge of the Zambia coffee industry.
Here is one of their shade trials, where they measure the success and quality of various varieties in differing levels of shade.
Only the red ripe cherries are picked by hand
Here the ripe coffee cherries are ready to be pulped
Before washing and drying on the patio cascade.
Cup quality is paramount, here every batch is being cupped for quality.
Hydroscopic irrigation is used to
maximise the water usage efficiency
The picked coffee is ready to
be processed, note the bicycle
which is the most important
method of transport for many.
Irrigation systems are complex and
need to have the water purified.
Water is a precious commodity,
this measures the evaporation
from the reservoir
The staff have all the necessary
facilities.
The school at Munali
has benefitted from
sales of coffee in the
UK..
